Assistant Professor Charles E. Dann III began his tenure-track appointment in the Department of Chemistry, Indiana University August 2008. He received his Ph.D. in biophysics & biophysical chemistry at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Baltimore , MD. His postdoctoral work was under the supervision of Dr. Johann Deisenhofer, University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, Dallas , TX
Distinguished Professor and Robert & Marjorie Mann Chair, Gary M. Hieftje, has been chosen as the next Florida State University (FSU) Charles S. Herron, Jr. Lecturer. Professor Hieftje was also selected as the winner of the 2009 Maurice Hasler Award, sponsored by the Spectroscopy Society of Pittsburgh, and the Legend in Environmental Chemistry Award sponsored by the ACS.

Professor Lane Baker is the recipient of the 2008 Starter Grant Award sponsored by the Society for Analytical Chemists of Pittsburgh (SACP). This award is to recognize achievements for high-quality innovative research and promoting the training and development of graduate students in the field of analytical chemistry. It was presented to Professor Baker at the 2008 Annual Awards Dinner held at the Duquesne University Campus, Pittsburgh, PA on May 19, 2008.
The department acknowledges Drs. Amar Flood, Stephen Jacobson, and Jill Robinson as recipients of the Indiana University Trustees Teaching Awards for 2007-08. This award is intended to emphasize classroom teaching, outstanding performance in course development or supervision.

Professor Liang-shi Li was selected as the recipient of a NSF Early Career Award for 2008. The National Science Foundation (NSF) honors outstanding junior faculty members in science and engineering nationwide with the Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) awards. The NSF Career Award supports exceptionally promising college and university junior faculty, who are committed to the integration of research and education.
Assistant Professor Silas Cook begins his tenure-track appointment January 2009 in the Department of Chemistry, Indiana University. He received his Ph.D. from Columbia University.
His research interests will be in Bioorganic Chemistry, Catalysis, Natural Product Synthesis, Organic Chemistry, Organometallic Chemistry, and Synthetic Chemistry.
Professor Krishnan Raghavachari has been awarded the 2009 Davisson-Germer Prize by the American Physical Society. This biennial award is given to recognize and encourage outstanding work in surface physics. Professor Raghavachari was chosen as the 2009 recipient of this prize for his development and application of quantum chemical methods to silicon surface reactions. Also, Professor Raghavachari has recently been elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry.
Sara Skrabalak joined the IU Chemistry Department this fall as an assistant professor. Her research interests are in Materials Chemistry, Nanotechnology, Physical Chemistry and Inorganic Chemistry. Professor Skrabalak will use electrospray to synthesize new materials for use as photocatalysts in water splitting and carbon dioxide reduction.

Steven Tait joined the IU Chemistry Department this fall as an assistant professor. His research interests are in Physical Chemistry, Materials Chemistry and Nanotechnology. Professor Tait will explore functional nanometer-scale architectures at surfaces formed by self-assembly of organic building blocks.

Erin Carlson joined the IU Chemistry Department this fall as an assistant professor. Her research interests are in Analytical Chemistry, Biochemistry, Bioorganic Chemistry, Chemical Biology, Organic Chemistry, and Synthetic Chemistry. Research in the Carlson laboratory will utilize a combination of chemical tools to both define the mechanisms of bacterial pathogenesis and identify potential therapeutic agents.
